She's two toes up working on enrichment!

Feliz is a two-toed sloth, so why does she have three toes? While two-toed sloths have three toes, they only have two fingers! Alternatively, three-toed sloths have three appendages on all four limbs.

Serving face for Cuban Sandwich Day! 🦎

Cuban iguanas have unique scales that armor their faces, giving them a rather bumpy look. These scales protect their faces, including their jowls, which store fat in case food becomes scarce. Luckily for Sandwich, he receives regular meals at the Zoo!
Winona the youngest member of the Angolan Colobus Monkey troop is starting to blend in very well with the adults!

Luckily, she is still set apart by her smaller size and silly demeanor. She often spends her time climbing, playing, and bothering the adult monkeys in the troop.
More August more antelope!

Eastern Bongos are the third largest species of antelope in the world. Even as a larger animal, these bongos can almost seamlessly blend in to the forested areas that they call home. While the bongo's stripes help them blend in to the foliage, their large ears act as an early detection system for potential threats near by.
Bornean Orangutans are classified as critically endangered, which means that conservation programs are vital to the ongoing survival of this unique species. At ZooTampa, we participate in the Orangutan Species Survival Program, which supports projects and conservation programs to protect and preserve wild Orangutans in their native habitats and the well-being of those living in human care.
Why the long face?

Malayan Tapirs have a prehensile snout formed by their nose and an elongated upper lip, also known as a proboscis. These herbivores use their snouts to grab branches and leaves as they browse through their habitats.
Hooting AND hollering!

North American River Otters use a diverse array of vocalizations with about a dozen different calls. While scent marking is another useful communication tool among river otters, vocalizations can be used with immediacy and in a range of different social situations.
Last week, we celebrated a very Stick-tacular Stick Season themed birthday for Mavi, the African Elephant!
Mavi is now 13 years old and one of her favorite things is a stick! From snacking on branches to moving the logs around, sticks are a favorite no matter the season.
Thank you to our Africa REDs interns for capturing the moment! 🎥
The Nicobar Pigeons can sometimes be hard to find, but they are definitely worth the effort! These beautiful birds are well known for their impressive iridescent feathers. Nicobar pigeons lack predators in their natural range, and as a result, they developed a unique coloration to help them stand out. 🪶
All the small things really count this World Lizard Day! 🦎
Norbert is a juvenile Komodo dragon who hatched at ZooTampa a little over 11 months ago. Komodo dragons are endangered, so every hatchling contributes continued hope for the conservation of this species.
We are thankful to work alongside other organizations under the Komodo Dragon Species Survival Plan to advocate for these amazing lizards and support their populations!
Antelope can be elusive, especially forest dwelling antelope like the yellow-backed duiker!

If you're on Expedition Wild Africa, you may be lucky to catch a glimpse of the duiker duo as you ride through their habitat. Jovi, shown here, is the slightly less secretive of the two and may be seen searching for the ideal shaded spot to rest during the day.
Riley the Ring-tailed Lemur 🤝 sweet potato.

What's high in fiber and safe for Riley to eat? Sweet potatoes, of course! Fans of Secrets of the Zoo: Tampa may already know that this lemur is allergic to bananas. Instead, Riley has a soft spot for cooked sweet potatoes! 🍠

‘Tis the Season For Giving!

Donate to the ZooTampa Giving Tree

Trustees of the Lowry Park Zoological Society, Directors of the Lowry Park Zoo Endowment Foundation, and the Employees and Volunteers of ZooTampa understand and appreciate the vital role of philanthropy to accomplish our work. That’s why we subscribe to the Donor Bill of Rights developed by the American Association of Fund Raising Counsel, Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, Council for Advancement and Support of Education, National Society of Fund Raising Executives:

“Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes that they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:

  1. To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
  2. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
  3. To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements.
  4. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
  5. To receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.
  6. To be assured that information about their donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
  7. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
  8. To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors.
  9. To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.
  10. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.”

ZooTampa at Lowry Park is committed to protecting your privacy. We value the trust of our donors, volunteers, employees, and other supporters and recognize that maintaining this trust requires us to ensure the confidentiality of personal information that you share with us.

As a non-profit organization, ZooTampa relies on your support, depends on the support of generous contributors, and achieves ambitious fundraising objectives by communicating with and understanding donors. We know that it is essential to protect the privacy of that information. ZooTampa, the Lowry Park Zoological Society, and the Lowry Park Zoo Endowment Foundation will neither sell nor trade a donor’s personal information to any other entity without the written permission of the donor.
